Does the implant set off the metal detector at the airport? The implants are made of titanium and should not set off the metal detector at the airport.
Do I need this surgery even though I don't have any symptoms?Yes, if a deformity is present the sooner it is treated the less damage will occur. You don't want to wait for pain, at that point there may be irreversible damage. We don't wait until our car tires are worn to balance them.
If this procedure is performed on a child does it have to be replaced later in life? The short answer is no, but this is not a guarantee. Normally, once the implant is inserted into the foot it never has to be changed. The bones will continue to grow peripherally around the implant.
Are there any limitations as far as sports go after this procedure?Once the tissues surrounding the implant are healed there should be no limitation. The abnormal motion is no longer present and normal motion will occur. Usually, there is a significant improvement in running, etc.
What are the chances of getting an allergic reaction to this implant?Titanium is the choice material to be used in the body since it is the least reactive.
Do I need this procedure even if I have a mild case of hyperpronation? That depends, if you have symptoms and other forms of conservative therapy, including orthotics, haven't been able to provide you with relief then this procedure would be helpful.
Can I predict the weather since there is an implant in my foot? You will not be a weather forecaster after the procedure (unless that is your profession).
Will I feel the implant in my foot? You should not be able to feel the implant after the procedure. Sometimes for the first few months a hard substance may be felt in the area of the surgery, but this is scar tissue and should dissipate after several months, if present.
Do I need to be premedicated prior to dental treatment or other surgical procedures? You do not need to premedicate dental or other surgical procedures, since the implant is not embedded into the bone.
Can I still get MRIs, CT scans, etc. with the implant in my foot?Yes, titanium is not reactive to these imaging modalities, unlike stainless steel.
Will this implant get rid of all of the pains in my body?No one can predict the outcome of any surgical procedure. If you have pain in your foot from an embedded needle one would suppose that once it is removed the pain should go away. There are many involved factors, the longer the needle is in the foot the longer it will take for the pain to go away once the needle is removed. When it comes to the joints and soft tissue attachments there may be irreversible damage that cannot be reversed with this procedure. However, improvement should be felt.
Do I still have to wear my orthotics after the procedure? If the orthotics were dispensed to treat hyperpronation than you will no longer need them, however there are other reasons for orthotics to be worn. Orthotics can be used to off-weight prominent areas to the bottom of foot. If those area are not surgically addressed than orthotics may be required after the procedure.
What causes hyperpronation? It is most commonly caused by hereditary or genetic factors.
Are there limitation to this procedure?Yes, every surgical procedure has it's limitations. In very severe cases of hyperpronation other surgical procedures may be necessary to achieve optimum correction.
